A noted writer on world politics observes: "It is a time for sobriety, not for emotions." If this is so, it is a time too for a serious study of President Radhakrishnan's sober, far- sighted political thought.
The world has never been in greater need of faith and a firm belief in values. Dr. Radhakrishnan stands for a firm scale of values and ideals. And he combines statesmanship and idealism with a strong feeling for human worth. His sincerity, his profound moral conviction, his genuine belief in liberty and progress, in human rights and in the dignity of human nature, his erudition, his sympathy and humanism. his persistent advocacy of peace and a world order transcending narrow concepts of nationalism have won him the esteem of people and governments in many countries. As a philosopher-statesman, he has been making a valuable contribution to the evolution of this new order and to lasting amity among nations. Many volumes have been written, and are being written on his philosophy. But it is indeed remarkable that no systematic study of his political and social ideals should have been made during the past half century. This work seeks to fill the gap. It represents the first book-length attempt to evaluate in some detail President Radhakrishnan's political thought.
The approach is two-fold. The first part of the book is a comparative study of President Radhakrishnan and of great masters of political thought, and representative thinkers including Nehru & Kennedy. The second part attempts to analyse and to interpret the President's thought in the light of the leading principles and theories of political science. The reference to the historical background in every chapter in the second part is meant to afford a general understanding of the origin and the nature of the problems involved and of current solutions, especially those Dr. Radhakrishnan insists on.
