I am happy to place the present publication, Position and Status of Women in Ancient India Volume II, before the readers. The volume comprises sixteen of the papers contributed to the Seminar on the theme held in March 1988. Thirty-three papers were published in Volume I. Still a few papers remain and we plan to publish them in Vol. III, hopefully within two-three months.

In organising the publication of the volume, I have received requisite help from the University administration, particularly from Sri Guru Dayal Prasad, Dy. Register (Dev.), Sri R. C. P. Sinha, Registrar and Sri Y. C. Satyavadi, Finance Officer. I express my thanks to them. I am extremely grateful to Professor C. S. Jha, Vice-Chancellor, B. H. U. for his spontaneous kind help, encouragement and guidance. In the Department, Prof. Purushottam Singh, my erstwhile student and now colleague and Head of the Department, extended me full cooperation and help; Dr. P. K. Agrawala and Dr. Harihar Singh also my erstwhile students and now colleagues helped me in correcting the proofs; I am thankful to them.

Sri Vipul Kumar Pandya, Manager, Ratna Printing Works took personal interest in printing the book neatly for which my thanks are also due to him.
