Author is currently serving as Chair person of prestigious Pharmacopoeia Commission for Indian Medicine & Homeopathy (PCIM&H), New Delhi. Author has obtained his Post Graduate Degree from Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Karnataka (RGUHS) and PhD from National Institute of Ayurveda (NIA) Jaipur, Jodhpur University. Author is a gold medalist from University of Mysore, and has profound theoretical and practical knowledge in Dravyaguna. Bhava Prakasha Samhita, which is regarded as Laghutrayee (Lesser triad) contains three Khanda namely Purva Khanda, Madhyama Khanda & Uttara Khanda. Bhava Prakasha Nighantu is part of Purvakhanda and presented in 23 Vargas. Apart from Nighantu Bhaga, the Purva Khanda also has Prathama Bhaga and Dwitiya Bhaga which is com- posed of 6 chapters each. Madhyama Khanda has 71 Chapters and deals with Diseases including their Diagnosis and Chikitsa (treatment). Uttara Khanda has two chapters namely Vajikarana and Rasayana.
Author of Bhava Prakasha Nighantu is Bhavamishra, son of Lataka Mishra who belonged to Magadha Desha, which is part of present Bihar. First name of Bhava Prakasha Nighantu was Haritakyadi Nighantu. His time period is considered as - 15th- 16th Century. Bhavamishrahas followed Sharangadhara Samhita and Madanapala Nighantu which belongs to 13th& 14th century and has been referred by the works of 17th century like Yogaratnakara and Lolimbarajiya.
Contents-23 Vargas of Bhava Prakasha Nighantu are Haritakyadi Varga, Karpuradi Varga, Guduchyadi Varga, Pushpa Varga, Phala Varga, Vatadi Varga, Suvarnadi Varga, Dhanya Varga, Shaka Varga, Mamsa Varga, Kritanna Varga, Vari Varga, Dugdha Varga, Dadhi Varga, Takra Varga, Navanita Varga, Ghrata Varga, Mutra Varga, Taila Varga, Sandhana Varga, Madhu Varga, Ikshu Varga&Anekartha Varga.
Classification is systematic, either based on morphology or used part or characters of herbs. Plants possessing aroma are included under Karpuradi Varga, weak stemmed plants mentioned under Guduchyadivarga. Based on used part, herbs are classified as Pushpa Varga (group of flower) & Phala varga (group of fruits). Larger plants are included in Vatadi Varga and the minerals are mentioned under Dhatvadi Varga.
