Foreword I am very much happy to know that the Department of Sanskrit, Rajganj College (University College) is going to publish proceedings of the seminar on 'Present-day Relevance of Lokacara approved by Smrtiasastras' held on the 24th and 25th September 2013 in collaboration with Rajganj Gour Banga Research Forum under the editorship by our beloved friend Dr. Prasanta Kumar Mahala. It is true that the Lokacaras as approved by our Smrtiasastras have got some scientific basis and this is why, they have been observed without any question or any exception from time immorial. Had they been without any rational foundation, they would have discontinued by this time. But actually from the fact of their ceaseless existence and observance it is proved that they are not based on any dogmatism. The derivative meaning of the term `Lokacara' is 'customs prevailing in the society', which are of many types depending on age, caste, creed, time of an individual. In other words, the Lokacara depends on faith on social customs as well as Sastras (Lokacaro nama lokavisvasah sastravisvaso).

In this book many interesting papers like the role of Lokacara in our daily life, Lokacara of someone who se near or dear one commits suicide, role of religion-based Lokacara on civilization, some Lokacaras connected with the observance of certain vows, sadacaras and their role in achieving human pursuits, role of Lokacara in Hindu Law particularly in the context of inheritance, a comparative study between Lokacaras and sastracara etc.
