Book Description
Preface

It gives us great pleasure in bringing out the proceeding of the 7th session of Indian Art History Congress held at Vivekananda Kendra, Kanyakumari (Tamilnadu) from 5th to 7th November 998. The general theme of the conference was Folk Art of India.

The Congress was inaugurated by Prof. (Dr.) V. N. Raja Sekharan Pillai, Vice-Chancellor, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottuyam, Kerala. Dr. S. R. Rao the General President of the session presented his presidential address on this occasion and made as appeal to the state and central Government to establish Folk Art Museums and academies to document and popularise and promote folk art. Dr. N. P. Joshi of Varanasi and Dr. K. V. Raman of "Chennai, two eminent Art Historians were Guest of Honour on this occasion. Dr. M. L. Nigam, Chairman, IHC, presided over the function.

3 Prof. K. D. Bajpai memorial lecture was delivered on this very day at 3 P. M. by Dr. R. Nagaswami.

This volume contains altogether 21 papers, though few more papers were also presented during the session. Unfortunately we have no written paper of those scholars, whose paper could not beincorporated in this volume. In spite of these drawbacks we note with satisfaction that the studies pre sented in this collection adequately emphasis the significant role of folk art in cultural context.

The India Art History Congress had requested its members only to bring paper on folk art but few scholars presented their paper which does not come under the purview of folk art. However, those papers has also been incorporated in this volume.

We have tried out best to bring this volume upto mark but we crave the indulgence of readers for errors of omission and commission.

We are very grateful to the participants of the session for attending and presenting their papers in the congress. We also take this opportunity to thank the Vivekananda Kendra for their nice hospitality.

We would like to express our deep gratitude to Dr. M. L. Nigam, Chairman and Dr. R. D. Choudhary, General Secretary of Indian Art History Congress fro their keen interest in the publication of this volume.

Last but not the least, we are thankful to Mr. Sundeep Singhal of Sundeep Prakashan, New Delhi for his pain staking and hard work in completing the printing of this volume within a very tight schedule.
