S.C. Saran (b. 14th July 1947) is B.A. (Hons) Pol Science and M.A. in Ancient Indian History and Archaeology from Patna University. He is working as Superin-tending Archaeologist in A.S.I. He has participated in many explorations and excavations, important ones being Jethian Valley (Rajgir), Bhimbandh (Jamue), Jahangira, Champa and Vikramshila at Antichak (Bhagalpur), Chirand (Chapra), Bihar and Agucha in Rajasthan. He has published more than three dozen learned articles in reputed journals, felicitations and commemoration volumes.
He organized an exhibition "Durzba Doshti" in Moscow, Russia in 1988 under cultural exchange programs. He also organized an important Museum 'Swatantrata Sangram Sangrahalaya' (1857-1947), which was inaugurated on 2nd October 1995 by the then Hon'ble Prime Minister of India Shri P.V. Narsimha Rao. He also put together many Museums like Archaeological site Museum Ropar (Punjab), Jogeshwar (Kumau) and Panipat State Museum, Panipat (Haryana). He has, from time to time, organized many exhibitions important among them being Jawahar Kala Kendra (Jaipur) and Delhi Red Fort. He was also one of the editors of the B.B. Lai Felicitations Volume.
The subject entitled "Early Historical Archaeology" and "Buddhist studies" has been chosen because Prof. Sinha had dedicated five decades of his academic life to it. He started his career as a historian but his work in the field of archaeology is unique. He solved many unsolved questions related to the Indian archaeology, particularly Middle Ganga Plain. His important works are the Antichak, Oriup and Champa (Bhagalpur), Sonpur (Gaya), Pataliputra (Patna), Vaisali, Buxar (Arrah), Lota Pahar (Chhotta Nagpur) and Jetian Valley explorations (Nalanda). But the most remarkable works of his life are the Neolithic settlement pattern at Chirand in Gangetic Valley and the Ancient Buddhist ruins at Antichak, which were identified for the first time as the actual site of the Ancient Vikramgila Mahavihar, a Buddhist monastery.
Prof. Sinha had given strong and revolutionary views on the Mehrauli Iron Pillar, the dating of the cyclopean wall of Rajgir and the reality of the Ramayana and Mahabharata epics. Much earlier, his promoter Dr. L.D. Barnett, said of Prof. Sinha: "He has been able not only to correct many errors of the previous writers, but also to throw much new light on the dark places of Indian History". Mr. J. Allan, a noted numismatist, with whom Prof. Sinha had worked in London, spoken highly of his Sound scholarship and hailed him in 1948 as a "historian of unusual promise".
Most of the articles on early historical period and Buddhist studies included in this volume are in conformity with the principles as Prof. Sinha had suggested. The other contents are research articles embodying important discoveries and newest reflections on different aspects of Indian history and culture.
We take this opportunity to express our deep gratitude towards the patrons Prof. B.B. Lal and Prof. A.K. Narain who had inspired and provided guidance from time to time. We are also beholden to the members of the editorial committee for their contributions and valuable suggestions.
We are most thankful to Dr. C.P. Sinha from Patna and Dr Sanjay Kumar Manjul, Dr. Piyush Bhatt, Sarvashri Gunjan Srivastava, Tejas Garge, Sarjun Prasad, Akshat Kaushik, B.K. Chauhan and Kishna Nand Pant of the Archaeological Survey of India who have helped us in many ways in bringing out this volume.
Thanks are also due to Shri B.L. Bansal, the proprietor of Sharada Publishing House for the willing acceptance to undertake the publication of this volume on time.
