Book Description
About the Book

The volume is but the outcome of the author's years of teaching experience, Indological research and association with national and international forums. Deeply re-searched and concrete data based, the work is valuable for scholars as well as for readers in the field of oriental and indological research.

It is divided into two parts. The first part is a collection of pointed research papers preferably in the form of synthesis in aspects of oriental and indological studies including Meiteilogy. The second part is of valuable data as furnishing the evidence for the cultural relationship between India and eastern countries like Japan, Thailand, Nepal, and Burma/Myanmar in matters of habits. Beliefs, thinking and historical trends. The author makes apt parallels which the readers will understand them clearly.

Preface

The research papers presented by me during 1985-1996 in national and international forums are now published in the book form titled researches in Oriental and Indological Studies. Discussion on these themes takes place within the compass of chapters into two parts. Most of the papers contain all information that can be extracted from the written Puyas/sacred texts and evidences. I have attempted to imbibe the best of the study of Manipuri sources and the scientific equipment of a modern professor and Indologist The love of sacred Manipuri texts are reflected in every line of these papers.

Except the Chapters II, X, XI and Famous Indologists and part II Oriental to this volume (the visit to Japan and Thailand in which) I have written after my visit the rest of the chapters are the series of my papers (15 in number) appeared in the form of abstracts in the proceedings of ISCA, IPC, AIOC and 2 papers on Samaveda and Atharvaveda presented and accepted for presentation in the Vedic seminars sponsored by International Foundation for Vedic Education, New Jersey-07065, USA, Seminar on Indo-Nepal relations (Kathmandu). Seminar paper on Influence of Shaktism in the literature of N. E. India sponsored by Regional Sahitya Academy, Calcutta at Gauhati, and a public lecture delivered by me on Sanskritisation of Myanmar in the prestigious organisation of Asia- the Asiatic Society on January 10, 1994.

I put on record my thanks to the Sectional Presidents of Anthropology and Archaeology Section of IDCA (1980-1996) and local Secretaries of All Indian Oriental Conferences for their respective sessions of these years in connection with the production of my abstracts/summaries of papers in their volumes. Full length papers of the chapters IV, VI, VIII, X, XI and XII appeared in the following journals and edited volumes Eikhoigi Shaktam Ed. by N. Gambhir Singh, Lamnue Thanbi Quarterly, ed. by Dr. S. Raghumani Mangang, Legis News Ed. by the Secretary of Manipur Legislative Assembly, Frontier Chronicle Ed. by N. Tombi Singh, The Indian Family a book Ed. by Dr. K.K. Chakravarti, IAS, Director, Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya, Bhopal, in 1994. I am especially grateful to Dr. Kalyan Kumar Chakravarti, respected Director who invited me to write a paper for his volume and get it published in his book in connection with the International Family year and thus became a great source of encouragement for me in the world of Ethnology and Anthropological Sciences. Most of the titles included in this volume have been changed and slightly altered in the light of new concrete based data and interactions. The second part comprises essays on Myanmar/Burma, Nepal, Thailand/Siam and Japan.

My research has been extended over these years on account of my participation in many International and National Conferences/Seminars and visit to Japan, Thailand, Myanmar (5 times) and Nepal. In every year I made it a point to prepare papers for Indian Philosophical Congress, Anthropology and Archaeology Section of ISCA, All India Oriental Conferences, etc. in addition to regional and local writings and lectures in N.GOs. like N.R.C., Diamond Club, State Archives Department, Legis News of Assembly of the State and Co-operative Departments of Manipur. At present, Manipuri studies have generated great interest among the young scholars engaged in historical, cultural, linguistic and literary aspects for Ph.D. and project works, The author's observations and reflections can be no more in doubt in view of his love for research and ceaseless investigations. Manipuri studies occupy an important place in Indian and south-east Asian culture and plays key roles in Oriental and Indological studies from the point of view of Ethnology, Archaeology and Culture. The striking part of that we know about .Manipur's contribution to the civilisation of the world is made through Manipuri Dance, Polo, martial arts and sports. Unfortunately considerable difficulties in the form of insurgent activities in the States. Ethnic clashes, etc., obstruct journey to the conferences and world meets. I journeyed to the Myanmar region in the seventies and eighties just before and during the military regime when great upheavals take place in Myanmar politics and I also studies Indo-Myanmar trade agreements primarily in the free trade zone areas of the two States.

I am grateful to the Manager, Parimal Publication, Delhi for the interest in the printing of this work due to which my work has been made available to the public in the book form efficiently. Further its quality is enhanced by the inclusion of the same in its well-known series of Indology.

I am also thankful to my young friends who helped me in carrying out the typing copy for the press. I am equally grateful to my wife Dr. Mrs. Asha Lakshman Prasad Gupta, M.Sc., M.Ed., PH.D. D.Sc. (Moscow), Assit. Professor in Life Science, Manipur University, my daughter Anjali Devi (Baby Rika Rani) and relatives who have helped me in one way or the other for my venture in various matters. I owe to them much more than I can express. If this work succeeds in contributing even an iota in the direction of serving the interest of Manipur and its people, I will feel more than satisfied.
