Society has been admiring and honouring scholars and achievers in different ways, thereby showing their gratefulness to scholars. This is an ancient tradition in India. A civilized society believes that scholars were the real guides, inspirers and conscience keepers of the culture.
The same tradition is continued in our own ways in a different manner. A scholar is presented with a felicitation commemoration volume during his life or commemoration volume after his death, and thus the scholarly world pays its tribute to the scholar intended. Undoubtedly this is the highest honour to a scholar. Co-scholars working in a particular field consider it an honour to contribute a research article of their choice to the felicitation or commemoration volume. Thus, these volumes have become authentic research publications and have become research volumes of reference.
The present commemoration volume is unique in two ways. Firstly, it is a volume in honour of Dr. Y.Gopal Reddy, one of the most well-known south Indian historians in the world. Secondly, its pages are enriched by about eighty six historians and archaeologists who have made a mark in their fields of specialization through their publications. When all these names are perused, one gets the impression of going through the list of the best of who is who at present in the field of history, culture and archaeological studies. Another notable feature is that while some of the scholars are veterans in the field, an opportunity has been provided to younger scholars who have been showing great promise in scholastic activities. Thus it is a harmonious collection of research articles on history, epigraphy, archaeology, iconography, numismatics, painting, and tourism etc. Naturally history has occupied a major portion in the volume. Without going into the details of individual scholars and their articles it may be said that this is worthy of being offered to a great historian.
I deem it a privilege to Write a Foreword to Reddy Smriti: Exploring the Historical Past (Commemoration volume in Honour of Dr. Y. Gopala Reddy) a collection of papers presented to Dr.Y.Gopal Reddy by his friends, students and admirers in India and abroad I have known Dr. Reddy for many years. He had been very active as Teacher on Telugu Land. I remember Prof. Reddy participating in a number of meetings with great enthusiasm and articulating the cause of Historical studies in Telugu Land.
