In spite of decades of dramatic progress in their treatment and prevention, infectious diseases remain a major cause of death and debility and are responsible for worsening the living conditions of many millions of people around the world. With the advent of anti microbial agents some medical leaders believed that infectious diseases would soon be eliminated and become of historic interest only.
Indeed in hundreds of chemotherapeutic agents developed since world war-II, most of which are potent and safe include drugs effective not only against bacteria but also against viruses, fungi and parasites. Nevertheless, we now realize as we developed anti microbial agents, microbes developed the ability to elude our best weapons and to counter attack with new survival strategies. At this juncture, need is felt to explore core strengths and potential of traditional healing sciences to control this situation.
The Department of AYUSH, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare Govt. of India has emphasized that the reported episodes of treatment/claims of Vector borne diseases like Malaria, Filariasis, Chickunguniya, Japanese Encephalitis etc in vogue are to be documented systematically. Further, the council has initiated a multicenter intramural project on "Documentation of reported medical practices /claims on prevention and management of Vector borne/ infectious diseases through Ayurveda and Siddha" and excited through field institutes located in different states across the country.
The information gathered from various sources viz. Ayurvedic colleges, physicians from Ayurveda, Siddha hospitals, dispensaries, clinics, private physicians, local healers, NGOs etc. has been systematically recorded in a specially developed information generation tool format and documented.
Appropriate leads from reported experiences may be taken forward for scientific validation to assess safety and efficacy through Reverse pharmacology and this technical report would serve as a basic document for this purpouse.
I hope, this technical report enriched with experiences of faculty members of Ayurveda and Siddha colleges, physicians from Government and Private Ayurveda, Siddha hospitals, dispensaries, clinics, local traditional healers, would immensely help the scientists, academicians, practitioners, research scholars, Public health administrators and students for sustainable utilization of merits of Ayurveda and Siddha and delivering safe, better health care services.
