M. V. Kamath has had a long career as a reporter, foreign correspondent and editor, having served in Mumbai, Delhi, Bonn. Paris, Geneva, United Nations, New York and Washington DC.

He has authored over 40 books on a wide range of subjects including history, biography, politics, journalism and fiction. He has chronicled the history of four top banks and is now working on a fifth.

His books on journalism are prescribed texts in many Institutes of Mass Communication. His book on The Philosophy of death & Dying and the one on Sai Baba of Shridi has been translated into several languages. The latter has gone into fourteen editions.

In the highly competitive world of journalism, the respect and admiration of professional colleagues is more valuable than any outside recognition, and few have gained it in so bountiful a measure as M. V. Kamath. My own acquaintance with him dates back to his stay in the United States two and a half decades ago when his highly acclaimed work on India-US relations introduced me to the complex world of Washington. It is a friendship marked not by frequent personal interactions or meetings but by an awareness of each other's work and writing and maintained through enquiries with friends. Occasionally, I would feel gratified by some comment he would make and feel the urge to write to him and on other occasions I had wanted to compliment him on some observation, but journalists are bad personal correspondents and letters formed in the mind were not quite put down to paper. Yet, long periods of being out of touch personally have not whittled my admiration for the man, quintessential journalist and reflective writer.
