Research is a systematic and scientific process and research methodology is the theory which defines how to proceed a systematic, scientific and objective research. The knowledge of methodology equips the researcher for a better research. It helps the researcher to develop a systematic, scientific and objective thinking towards his research field. It simply means that proper study materials on research methodology could be a boon for any research scholar. It is my humble effort to produce one such material for the good of the research scholars and especially for those who want to do research in music.
Research in the field of Indian music has been a very challenging task for the researchers as there were very few materials available on it. Scholars have hardly any cue that what kind of research already had been done by previous scholars in the field of Indian Music. In the want of such materials and proper research methodologies, new scholars have not been able to provide new directions to the research in theories and practices of Indian Music. Although, Departments of Music set up by various universities and degree colleges are engaged in the task of research but they have not been able to provide relevant study materials to their research scholars.
No need to say that there are several books available on research methodologies in other disciplines but they are designed to serve the purpose of research of their subject requirements. It is not only tuff but also misleading sometimes to take any direction and study from those methodologies according to our need. As a teacher and research supervisor, working and guiding my students in their research, I have experienced that in the field of Indian music, there are no adequate books to explain proper research methodology in the context of Indian Music. With this intention. I have prepared this book to fulfill the requirement of researchers in the field of Indian Music or musicology with simple examples and easy understandings. In the present book, an attempt has been made to provide a complete knowledge on research methodology in the context of Indian music.
Now, let me allow discussing some features of this book. It gives the whole concept of research, including its purpose, criteria, characteristic etc. It covers different types of research and its description in the context of music.
