Foreword The early theories of urbanization championed by Sir Henry Maine, Ferdinand Tonnies, Emile Durkheim, Louis Wirth and others distinguishing 'urban' from 'rural' had culminated in a revealing piece of research by the noted anthropologist, Rebert Redfield, who had commented in 1953 that "After the rise of cities men became something different from what they had been before". Critics, however, have pointed to the fact that these concepts of "urbanity" and "the rural' and mere non-Western and Eurocentric ideal types. Contrary to this largely Western conceptualization of urbanization, way back in 1961, Edward M. Bruner, while agreeing to Hauser, had noted,"...we find in many Asian cities...society does not become secularized, the individual does not become isolated, kinship organizations do not break down, nor do social relationships in the urban environment become impersonal, superficial and utilitariam".
