The book containing nine chapters attempts to throw light on Maulana Azad, who was a man of many dimensions. From his early life to education, his career as a journalist, his role in Freedom Movement, his efforts for Hindu-Muslim unity, his spiritualism, his social and cultural activities and his role as a maker of Modern India have been covered in this book.
Ajoy Kumar Chattoraj, an alumnus of Ranchi University, a Gold Medalist of M.A. History of 1973-75 batch, has been teaching History since 1976. He is presently Head, University Department of History, Ranchi University, Ranchi. He obtained his Ph.D. degree from Ranchi University in 1986. He is actively engaged in Research work and has published a number of research papers in different journals.
This book is a collection of papers presented in the National Seminar organized by the Department of History, Ranchi College, Ranchi on March 8-9, 2013, which was sponsored by the UGC, Eastern Regional Office, Kolkata. The theme of the Seminar was The Role of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad in Indian National Movement and His Contribution in Nation Building.
Maulana Azad was at once a journalist, a political thinker, a freedom fighter, an educationist and a religious reformist. Maulana Azad stayed in Ranchi during his internment from 5 April, 1916 to 31 December. 1919 and was engaged in social and cultural activities. Maulana Azad's religious ideas were akin to Ashoka or Vivekananda as he stressed on oneness of all religions, which to him was prerequisite to communal harmony. He set an example to honour other religions even sticking to one's own religion. The theme of the seminar was divided in eight sub-themes: 1. Maulana Azad's family background and early life. 2. Maulana Azad as a Journalist. 3. Maulana Azad as a thinker - his social and political ideas 4. Maulana Azad and Indian freedom struggle. 5. Maulana Azad: Social, political and cultural activities during his internment in Ranchi. 6. Maulana Azad: Ideas about Education and his contribution to the field of Education. 7. Religious Ideas of Maulana Azad and his Spiritualism. 8. Maulana Azad as the maker of Modern India. This book throws light on his life, ideas, role in freedom struggle, spiritualism, his social, political and cultural activities and his contribution in making India.
Prof. S.Z.H. Jafri traces the influence of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan on Maulana Azad on the question of religion and theology. About social role of he was influenced by Jamaluddin Afghani. Maulana Azad's preference to Hindu-Muslim unity to Swaraj has been explained by Prof. Jafri. Maulana Azad was a first rate orator.
