I was born into a farming family. As a Delta Farmer, I have been in the agricultural business for the past fifty years.
The farming activity in delta districts is solely dependent on River Cauvery. Since the year 1974, Cauvery delta farmers have been deprived of their right to use Cauvery water. This made them poor, debt struck and has led to suicides. Farming has become unsustainable. The root cause of all these sufferings is the insufficient flow of Cauvery water.
The aim of this book is to let our North Indian leaders, BJP and Congress, know that River Cauvery is sacred and revered and that it makes the delta soil fertile and rich. Without Cauvery water, the delta lands now look barren and dead. All the fine arts grew and developed only because of Cauvery. Architecture was in full bloom on the banks of Cauvery because of Tamil kings.
Cauvery irrigation is systemic and technically viable. Solutions to augment the flow of Cauvery water from the west-flowing rivers have been proposed to resolve the issue permanently.
Mr. Kattumannarkoil V. Kannan was born on 16th February 1949 into a well-to-do landlord's family in Kattumannarkoil in Cuddalore District. His family was well known in the district because his father was a great lawn tennis player in the 1930s and 1940s.
The author lost his father when he was eighteen and was forced to get into agriculture as he was the only son. He studied in the local government high school and acquired a degree in B.Sc., Mathematics from Annamalai University. He graduated his B.G.L. Degree through distance education from Mysore University.
Since 1967, he has been farming in the family land, of about sixty acres, passed down to him. He is a shrewd agriculturist and raised paddy and sugarcane in his lands.
He noticed the sufferings of farmers owing to the forces of nature and the lethargic attitude of successive governments. With Mr. A.T. Sethurama Pillai, he was instrumental in forming the Kollidam Keezhanai Pasana Vivasayigal Sangam and was its treasurer. Later, he served as Vice President of the Cauvery Delta Farm Producers' Welfare Association where Mannargudi S. Renganathan was the lifetime general secretary. He wrote a book on agriculture Yer, Neer, Paarkakka, which was released by honorable Pon. Radhakrishnan, Central Minister, in the year 2016.
I am a farmer by birth and continuing agriculture. I am a Delta Farmer doing Agriculture for the past 50 years. The farming activity in delta districts is soley dependent on RIVER CAUVERY. From the year 1974 Cauvery delta farmers are deprived of their rights in using Cauvery water. This made them poor and debt stricken and led to suicides. Farming became unsustainable and unsuitable the root cause for all these sufferings are insufficient flow of Cauvery water. I have been watching the prolonged legal battles between two riparian States. The upper riparian state Karnataka is unrelenting and adamant. The Successive central governments does not put enough Pressure on Karnataka Government because the central government does not know how Cauvery is mingled and twined with the life of Tamil Nadu farmers. Cauvery is in the blood and Flesh of every delta Farmer. Without Cauvery there is no Life to the delta Farmers.
This prompted me to write this book. The aim of this book is that our North Indian leaders BJP or Congress must know how River Cauvery is so sacred and revered and how it makes the delta soil fertile and rich. Without Cauvery water the delta lands now looks Barren and dead. All fine arts grew and developed only because of Cauvery. Architecture was in full bloom on the banks of Cauvery because of Tamil Kings.
The Irrigation system in the Delta is the most oldest and longest in the world. The Engineering marvel KALLANAI was built by the great Chola King Karikalan in the 2nd Century. Cauvery Irrigation is most systemic and technically viable. I'm greatly indebted to PWD Engineer N. Natarajan whose is magnanimous enough to permit me to translate this statistical and hydrological details from his tamil book. In this book I have added the articles of Mannargudi S. Renganathan. Prof. Janakarajan and world bank consultant Dr.S. Bavanishankar to focus how this problem was approached by various methods. I also included the final order of the Cauvery water tribunal and the supreme court final verdict, as summed up by Justice A.K. rajan. In the last pages solutions have been given to augment the flow of Cauvery water from west flowing rivers there by solving the issue permanently.
