Preface

Teaching of Ayurveda was rendered in different states on the lines of gurukula tradition before independence of India. Uniformity of teaching of Ayurveda was not present during those times. Several commities were constituted (Bhor, Usman, Chopra, Vyas etc) to discuss the important aspects for development of Ayurveda i.e. Teaching and Research of Ayurveda for establishing standards. Among all the committees, Chopra committee on Indigenous systems of Medicine constituted by Government of India (19.12.1946) made some notable suggestions with a view to provide a rightful place for Ayurveda in the medical curriculum. The diploma courses in Ayurveda slowly replaced by degree courses affiliated to Universities of different states with their own drafted syllabus. Conflict between Suddha Ayurveda and integrated curriculum was continuing in entire country for a few years and the issue was resolved by the establishment of Central council for Indian medicine during 1969-1970. This Council successfully implemented uniform syllabus in all the colleges of India. During the past five decades, council updated and modified the syllabus, duration of the subjects to be taught etc. Initially Ashtanga Samgraham was introduced into the first year of the course. Later it was replaced by Ashtanga Hrudaya (Sutra Sthana).

Presently, National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) has framed a New Syllabus which includes a subject in the first B.A.M.S Curriculum by the name "Samhita Adhyayan". This paper contains chapters of two important samhitas i.e. Ashtanga Hrudaya Sutra Sthana first 15 chapters and Charaka Samhita Sutra Sthana first 12 chapters.
