This work has been undertaken at the instances of many persons who think it desirable that the Samkhya-Yoga, as it is understood by those to whom it is a living system, should be presented to those who do not know Indian languages well. Only an abridged account of the philosophical doctrine of Karma from the Karmatattva could be given in this book. The scope of this work did not admit of authoritative passages, which form the basis of this exposition, being cited in extensor. The reader is referred for such passages to Samkhyatattvaloka, a new edition of which work is being published in the Government Sanskrit Series, Benares. The exposition of the doctrine of Karma is based on the Yoga Sutras of Patañjali and their commentary by Vyasa. This exposition is, we think the first attempt to make the meaning of the Yoga Sutras on the subject of Karma and their commentary thoroughly clear. The implied logic could not be fully dealt with in so short a treatise.
