Adi Shankaracharya has defined Righteousness (Dharma) as that which accomplishes the three tasks of maintaining the social system in an excellent condition, bringing about the worldly progress of every living being and progress in the spiritual realm as well. Today, society is eroded by hooliganism, corruption, immorality and inefficiency. State administration is as good as non-existent as well as distressful. Everywhere there is a reign of terror and discontent. Hence it is the duty of every righteous citizen to find a remedy to this and restructure the society. Several eminent people opine that several evils have infiltrated the present day journalism. Many consider this as a reflection of the overall deterioration of moral values. The prime objective of seekers who consider that Righteousness maintains the social system in good condition, is to appropriately reestablish the ability of this medium which can contribute valuably in moulding the social mind.
The first stage in restructuring the society is to put before the society the prevailing social scenario, the reasons behind it and remedies to it. In this context, it is important that the reality reaches the people in the right manner. A periodical is an important medium for this task. Therefore it is essential that one contemplates on which characteristics this medium which is capable of moulding the social mind should possess and which it should not. This book elucidates on these characteristics along with examples. Periodicals put forth several items right from news providing mere information of some event to stories for children. Rather, if one asks what periodicals do not include. then the answer will be that which cannot be expressed through them. Journalism means contemplating on which among all these issues should be published and which should not, the style in which they should be put forth and exactly which aspect should be learnt from it. What will be published in a periodical is decided by the viewpoint of the editor on journalism, which in turn depends on his perspective towards life.
