It gives me great pleasure to present to the world of scholars the present edition of the Saradiyakhyanamamala of Harsakirti shortly after my edition of the Anekarthatilaka of Mahipa published in the same Series in 1947. The work of preparing a critical edition of the Saradiyakhyanamamala was entrusted to me in the year 1950 by Dr. S. M. KATRE, Director of the Deccan College Research Institute, Poona, for being included in the Institute's Series called the 'Contributory Studies towards A Dictionary of Sanskrit on Historical Principles' in general and the 'Sources of Indo-Aryan Lexicography' in particular. I started my work on the critical edition of the SN soon after it was entrusted to me by procuring five manuscripts of the work-four from the Government Manuscripts Library at the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute, Poona and one from the Manuscripts Library of the Deccan College Research Institute and having worked at it at different intervals, submitted to the Institute my press-copy early in January 1951. I am glad that the work is now available in print without any delay.
Before concluding the preface it is my pleasant duty to acknowledge with gratitude the help I received from several persons in bringing out this volume. In this connection my thanks are due to Dr. S. M. KATRE, for giving me an opportunity to edit for the second time a lexicographical work in the 'Sources of Indo-Aryan Lexicography' Series undertaken by the Institute. I am also thankful to Prof. P. K. GODE, M.A., Curator, Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute, Poona, for the loan of the four manuscripts of the SN from the Government Manuscripts Library, and to Dr. R. G. HARSHE, D.LITT. (Paris), Registrar, Deccan College Research Institute, for allowing me the use of one manuscript of the work from the Institute's collection of manuscripts. I must also thank Miss Suman N. DHAVALE, G.A., but for whose help in the irksome task of preparing the glossary appended to the text, it would not have been possible for me to complete my press-copy so early. Lastly, I have to put on record my sincere thanks to Pt, K. V. K. SHARMA, Vyakaranavidvan, my colleague in the Sanskrit Dictionary Department, for helping me in correcting the proofs with valuable suggestions at times and to Mr. S. R. PARAN]PE, the enthusiastic Manager of the Poona University Press for the prompt and efficient printing of this work. The Samartha Bharat Press, Poona, also deserves my thanks for the printing of the preliminary portion and the glossary.
