The present Volume offering felicitations to Dr. Sarup Singh on the occasion of his Aaiti Purti, contains contributions in the form of reminiscences on the part of persons of varying ranks and age groups, who interacted with him in the course of his eminently fruitful career. The contributions, in both the English and Hindi parts, generally speaking, fall into three categories. First, there are those who prefer writing down the memory lane, reminiscing. _ Then there are others who seek' to move beyond the memory lane into effective channels. Finally, we have those who traverse the investigative paths. Since the reminiscences centre round one particular individual, they tend, in certain respects to be repetitive. But it has been ensured that they do not become obtrusive for the reader's attention or interest. The photo-section serves as the pictorial compliment of the verbal portraits presented in the rest of the Volume.
It is hoped that the readers will find the Volume at once both instructive and interesting.
Dr. Sarup Singh's greatness is of an unusual order for a number of reasons. To perform one role or another and to do it brilliantly is given to many in life. But to have combined a vast variety of roles as Dr. Sarup Singh did in the course of his long career and to have carried but with a clean bill of health is a rare achievement by any reckoning. What is more to have made his mark not only in the world of administration and politics but also in the realm of letters comes close to a miracle-even at eighty Dr.Sarup Singh continues to be intellectually productive. It is particularly remarkable that Dr. Sarup Singh has excelled not by the power of excess as they do in the West but by that of moderation which is in the true radition of Indian Culture. Dr. Sarup Singh richly deserves a volume in his honour celebrating his achievement.
