As someone whose origins are lost in antiquity, with no written records about his antecedents, he stands tall, unique, revered by a multitude of devotees. He commands a prominent place in the Hindu scriptures. He has emerged as the most important member of the Hindu trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Such is the role of Shiva in the Indian mythology. He is known by many names-Shiva, Gangadhar, Mahesh and Mahadev to name a few. The names Mahesh and Mahadev indicate his prominent position among Hindu Gods.
Shiva is worshipped across the length and breadth of the country and his followers are known as Shaivites.
Shiva is the key theme of many stone sculptures, exquisite bronzes and paintings. He stands alone or with his bull Nandi. He is a mendicant, with a begging bowl. In some paintings, he is seen as a father with sons Ganesha and Skanda. He is depicted as a husband with his wife Parvati. He is also depicted in the abstract phallic form known as 'lingam.
