Book Description
About the Author

Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj is the fifth original Jagaduru of the world. So far only four Saints have been acknowledged as the original Jagadgitrus, namely Jagadguru Shri Shankaracharya, Jagadguru Shri Ramanujacharya, Jagadguru Shri Nimbarkacharya and Jagadguru Shri Madhvacharya.

Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj, who presented a unique reconciliation of the varying philosophies propounded by them and evinced his profound and unparalleled scholarship of the Vedas, Shashtras, Puranas and various other scriptures in his discourse made in pure Sanskrit before eminent representatives of the Kashi Vidvat Parishat, a body of 500 top-ranking scholars of India and left them spellbound and astounded was honoured with an unprecedented title of the Jagadguruttam or supreme among all Jagadgurus on 14 January 1957. They were so charmed by his personality suffused with the nectar of devotion and divine love that they declared him as the Bhakti-yoga-rasavatar (Dissension of Divine Love and Bliss).

Preface

Awash with the sweetest form of transcendental bliss Shyama Shyam Geet is a unique creation of Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj. Each of its couplets is suffused with an all enchanting sentiment of divine love. In this horrendous ocean of inane existence where the helpless human being assailed by the ferocious waves of material afflictions and surrounded by selfish elements ready to swallow him like hungry crocodiles, is eternally restless to reach the shore of pure love and bliss. Selfless devotion to Shri Radha Krishna is the easiest and best course open to him. This incomparable work of Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj can take you on to this path of devotion. Reading it from beginning to end with right emotions, one feels incessantly increasing flow of blissfulness with each succeeding couplet culminating in an unstoppable torrent. The elegant depiction of various delightful pastimes of Shri Radha Krishna simply inundates one's heart and mind with abundant love for Shyama Shyam. In short, Shyama Shyam Geet is a veritable triveni (confluence) of lucid language, mellifluous thoughts and melodious verse going through which, persons with devotional feelings will be able to enjoy its transcendental beauty and also get a glimpse of Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj as the bhakti-yoga-rasavatar (Descension of Divine Love and Bliss).

Foreword

This foreword that I am writing in the following lines is in keeping with the tradition of beginning a book with some introduction.

The Vedas say, "raso vai sah" which means Brahman or God is the Embodiment of Supreme Bliss. This attribution is made in two senses (i) rasyati iti rasah - that which is savoured or enjoyed, such as honey; and (ii) one who savours the ras, such as a bee. The ras or bliss which Brahman or Lord Krishna Himself enjoys is called svarupananda. In this, Lord Krishna by His divine power referred to as svarup shakti, enjoys the sweetness of His bliss.

When He enjoys a special sweetness of this bliss through His devotees, it is known as svarupshaktyananda, which again is of two types (i) aishvaryananda in which God's majesty and opulence is predominant and that of sweetness is secondary and (ii) manasananda, which has His sweetness alone. Comparatively, aishvaryananda is more relishable than svarupananda and still more relishable is manasananda. This is what is called the brajras. This is the most delectable of all rasas. This book Shyama Shyam Geet has been written with the brajras as the core content. The most intimate loving pastimes of Shri Radha Krishna have been presented in the form of 1008 couplets. In addition to the pastimes the related doctrinal aspect has also been dealt with in the book. The oneness of Radha-Krishna, and yet Radha being the personified form of the madanakhya mahabhava, the highest stage of divine love, Lord Krishna's fascination for and subservience to Her love, distinctive qualities of Gopis' love and many other things useful for the devotional practice have been expounded in great detail in the book. The entire subject matter is in complete agreement with the Puranas, the Vedas and other scriptures as well as the views and statements of the various Saints. If anyone derives even the least benefit from this text, I shall consider my effort a success.
