This writ petition was instituted by a student who was denied admission to a course in a college run by SGPC on the ground that since the student trimmed her hair and plucked her eyebrows, she was not entitled to a seat reserved for a Sikh. The petitioner contended that she was a Sehajdhārī Sikh and was not required to maintain the hair uncut but none- theless she was entitled to admission. The most important question before the High Court was 'how essential was it for a Sikh to maintain long hair?'

The author himself presented before the court as an expert witness and attempted to adduce evidence in support of the proposition that all the Gurus from Nanak to Gobind Singh, without a single exception, supported the hirsute Khalsa appearance. The historical and philosophical impact of the Sikh movement and the prospect of its impinging meaningfully on the future of humankind was also pointed.
