About the Book The book draws out a comprehensive picture of Sikh Model of Education based on the educational philosophy presented in Sri Guru Granth Sahib. This model is not limited to the teaching and learning rather it represents an art of complete living. The book also discusses the life and teachings of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism; the educational system of his times; the concept of man and society as education has great concern with man and society; Guru-Chela relationship as these are the two pioneer variables of any teaching process. And last but not the least the role of Sikh Gurdwaras in the field of education, it covers broad spectrum in the present context and it has also seized the space to provide review and suggest directions for further research.

It is shocking that the Punjab, the land of Gurus, is lagging behind in the field of education. The survey reports of the international agencies on Punjab's education system are appalling. The present work can be a beacon of light for the policy makers to change the dismal situation.

About the Author Dr Meharban Singh currently a senior lecturer at Montgomery Guru Nanak College of Education, Jalandhar, started his career as a teacher from Sri Guru Ram Das Khalsa Senior Secondary School, Amritsar. He is in the field of education since 1991. After completing his Masters in Political Science, Punjabi and Education, he received his Ph.D. Degree in the Faculty of Education from Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar in 1997. He obtained Diploma in Urdu Language from National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language, Department of Secondary and Higher Education, Government of India in 2009. Forever learner of Education, Gurbani, Sikh Religion and Culture, he has several Research Papers and Articles published in different magazines, journals, souvenirs and newspapers to his credit.

Preface The year 1992, 7th day of August, around 1:30 p.m. when I T was taking my last class, Harbans, the 12th class student came across the classroom, And in a low profile said, "Sir...Sir." Taking off my eyes from the class, when I looked at the door, he was waiting eagerly. "Come in..." I said. As he was sweating profusely. he just signaled, as saying... "Please come out." I came out into varandah with the book in my hand. He atonce burst out... "Sir...Sir...Kulwinder has gone mad, he wants to kill himself... Sir... Please...stop him, because you can! He wouldn't say no to you." I asked, "What's the matter?" He replied something and, ultimately, I agreed to accompany him as Kulwinder was at his residence.

As the last bell rang, the voices around me aroused extensively, but couldn't bother my ears because I was still thinking about Kulwinder's problem. Earlier he had discussed many times his problem with me. His problem originated with the death of his father. It was a cumbersome job for him to continue his studies. His elder brother, who looked after the ancestral dairy work, wanted an escape from the burden of his brother's educational expenditure that occurred every month. But Kulwinder wanted to continue his studies. A person, was needed to provide for his studies.

Introduction Guru Nanak occupies a unique place amongst the spiritual Gleaders, preceptors, reformers and saints of Bhakti movement in India. His teachings have everlasting impact on the life and thought of the people. Guru Nanak was a prolific and originative writer who gave such thoughts which showed fresh paths to achieve new goals in life. He also solved various problems of human life in his own way. There is no aspect of human life and society for which Bāņi (Sacred hymn) of Guru Nanak does not provide guidance. The Guru had a definite aim before him. He wanted to build a nation of self-respecting and self-reliant people who should be spiritually, socially and morally strong. He moulded such people out of the misery-trampled, ignorant and hag-ridden society.
