This book presents a detailed account of the socio-religious and political life of the Sikh, a military order of the Hindu dissenters in Punjab. Tracing their origin and history, with special focus on Sikh Jats, it discusses at length their classification and geographical distribution, their social customs, religious beliefs, fairs and festivals, and their characteristics. It also describes in detail their recruitment in the British Army. The list of districts and tehsils with their relative value as Sikh recruiting grounds and the names of some of the principal tribes found therein, and the list of principal fairs held in the Sikh Recruiting Districts mentioned by the Recruiting Staff officer as affording good opportunities for recruiting have been appended as well.
