The book is a collection of chapters contributed by the different scholars. Dr. Mohinder Kumar Slariya is currently working as Associate Professor of Sociology in the Department of Higher Education, Govt. of Himachal Pradesh and presently posted at Govt. College, Chamba, Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla. He is serving the department since 1997. He has completed Post-doctoral task from Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Department of Geology and Geography, University of Turku, Finland sponsored by Finnish Science Academy in 2015. He has also facilitated and guided post-doctoral fellow, doctoral and master students of Finnish Science Academy as fellow of the academy. His major research interests are human dimensions of development, environment, climate change, food security, tribal studies and moreover to make sociology most acceptable and objective science of society.
He published more than 20 research papers in different national and international research journals, published 46 books (38 National and 8 international from Germany and USA) organized 5 conferences, participated as resource persons in more than 20 conferences, presented more than 22 research papers in different national and International conferences, published 6 chapters, organized 4 international lectures and competed 3 UGC sponsored research projects and 3 international projects abroad. Presently working as reviewer of nati national (2) and international research journals (5) like; International Sociology, International Journal of Sociology and Social Anthropology, Grassroots International research Journal of Natural Resources etc.
Dr. Slariya, is founding General Secretary of Sociological Society, Himachal Pradesh, has been General Secretary of North-west Indian Sociological Association-2018-2020 (NIWSA), life member of International Sociological Association, Indian Sociological Society, North Western Indian Sociological Association, Social Science and Humanities Association, Sociological Society, Himachal Pradesh.
Social exclusion covers a wide range of social and economic problems being faced by human beings and it is much graver than being in poverty which is steer violation of basic human rights. Social exclusion or marginalization is a social disadvantage and a social phenomenon by which the minority or sub-group is being excluded and locked out the participation of excluded group (s) in social life. It is important to understand the various institutional mechanisms through which resources are being allocated, distributed and operated in such a way and it systematically deny particular groups of people to access resources and recognition for which they deserve. Hence, it can be stated emphatically that social exclusion is not only material deprivation, but also to institutions and processes which reproduce disadvantage or deprivation (s).
Social exclusion is a multi-dimensional concept having varied dimensions in which people are excluded in respect of livelihood, security, employment, income, property, housing, health, education, skills, and cultural capital, citizenship and legal equality, democratic participation, public goods, family and sociability, humanity, respect, fulfilment and understanding are few to count. In short, social exclusion is a social phenomenon by which the minority or sub- group is excluded from the mainstream society. The extent, nature and implications of social exclusion among the identified marginalized groups, like; tribals, dalits, persons with disabilities, muslims, fisher-folks etc. in terms of accessibility to and utilization of basic amenities (food and nutrition security, water, shelter), health and sanitation, education and development, livelihood and income, equality before law/protection against exploitation, abuse and discrimination etc.
By keeping these aspects in mind, scholars from different parts of the country and different academic and research institutions, lot of contributions have been received and out of those, 16 contributions have been finalized after the peer- review process constituted specifically for this book. Debjani Sarkar & Dr Amar Latta, research scholar and assistant professor working in the university has contributed on the Social Exclusion, Economic Marginalisation and Tribal Issues: Global Scenario. Marginalization is a topic which is omnipresent in the world from a very long time. This issue not only talks about the reason for its presence but also how the situation can be changed. Nomads are facing the exclusion whether social, political or economic. This chapter aims to identify and explore the various reasons for such exclusion and marginalization and also attempts to critically analyze the interrelationship between economic and social marginalization. This chapter further look after some suggestions given by different NGOs and Government Organization to lessen the gap further and strengthen their involvement in the various sectors of the society.
Kaumudi Sharma who is working as Assistant Professor of Sociology in the Department of Higher Education, Govt. of Himachal Pradesh has been the student of Panjab University Chandigarh. The present chapter entitled, Social Exclusion and Economic Exploitation: A Sociological Study of Mali Women in Chandigarh is based on her study conducted during her master at Panjab University. As per her research interests on social exclusion, social development, social demography and gender studies, she contributed a case study of Malis in Chandigarh.
