Book Description
Foreword

It is a matter of great pride that DME Media School's annual ICAN conference has now established itself as one of the country's premier annual media events. The Media School and DME in general has been striving hard to promote thought, deliberation, introspection, and research into relevant areas of study. For the third edition of ICAN, more than 200 scholars and academicians sent in their abstracts and after scrutiny over 140 full papers have been selected for publication. These publications are in the form of six books.

These books engage with a myriad of issues concerning our community-(1) gender discourse and youth in media, (2) environment and health communication, (3) social media, digital streaming and cinema, (4) media narratives, agenda setting and politics, (5) and CAA, Corona, fake news and ethics. These books cover diverse contemporary issues right from women empowerment to fake news.

The soul of the publication lies in our inherent concern for development of community. Even as a broadly Western emphasis on liberal thought and values has recently outshone the focus on community, there is no denying that in real life, issues of morality and personal freedom take place within a larger context. To then be able to, academically and without bias, research into the complex functioning and turmoil within the very space we inhabit is a task not only worthy, but also forward-looking due to the multitude of opinions, solutions, and possibilities eventuated.

Acknowledgements

This book has come out with the institutional support of Delhi Metropolitan Education (DME), and the motivation for this entrepreneurship came from the leaders of this institute i.e. Mr. Vipin Sahni, Chairman, Mr. Kiran Sahni, Chairperson and Mr. Aman Sahni, Vice-Chairman. The academic guidance came from Honourable Justice Bhanwar Singh, Director General and Dr. Ravi Kant Swami, Director, DME. Converting the research papers to produce a book on Issues of Community, Agenda and News was a big task which could not have been accomplished had the visionary leadership not been there by our side.

DME Media School has witnessed progress leaps and bound in a short period of its existence. The school is known not only for curricular but also for co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. The school has organised three consecutive international media conferences ICAN successfully. The third edition of ICAN is being organised in collaboration with a foreign university i.e. Deakin University of Australia, two Indian universities - Adamas University, Kolkata and KR Mangalam University, Gurugram and a reputed professional organisation Public Relations Society of India (PRSI). The first and the second editions of ICAN witnessed huge participation and laid a solid foundation for the third edition.

Preface

21th century is the century of rapid technological advancement, still geo-political and cross-cultural issues have perplexed the world order. In the era of cosmopolitanism and multi-culturalism, communities and their issues have been thrown to the backyard. Countries with military might and deep pockets set the agenda and communities both local and global are devoid of a space in the so-called agenda of development. New media and news media tools are being used by states as well as non-state actors with ulterior motives and the level- playing benefits of the communication technology appear significantly diminished.

The communities need to be approached from social, religious, cultural and ethnic perspective with an academic orientation towards indigenous values and universally prevalent thoughts. The researchers are expected to be interested in investigating the role of mass communication and mass media in the community settings and evaluating their impact on resolving (or compounding) the issues confronted by a community. Development covering every spectrum of life remains a relevant issue for mass communication scholars.

Within the country, minority communities including tribals and dalits are facing seclusion. In the conflict zones of the globe, people are facing persecution leading to migration.
