The Krsna consciousness movement is now spread all over the world, yet its originator, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, remains largely unknown. Even in India, where at least the name of Lord Caitanya is widely familiar, most people know little about His activities or message. And even persons who know something of Lord Caitanya mostly misunderstand Him as merely a great devotee, whereas revealed scriptures uphold that He is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Drawing particularly from the voluminous original biographies Sri Caitanya-bhagavata and Sri Caitanya-caritamrta, this introductory book attempts to summarize Lord Caitanya's activities and teachings. Certain customs, practices, and attitudes within traditional Hindu society as recounted herein, and even the very personage of Lord Caitanya, may seem strange to the unacquainted. Nonetheless, the reader is requested to give the text a patient and open-minded review, which will likely afford at least initial appreciation of Lord Caitanya's compassion and sweetness, and of His mood and mission. Detailed knowledge may be gathered by studying Sri Caitanya-caritamrta.* For the benefit of readers wholly new to this subject, a glossary and Sanskrit pronunciation guide are included at the back of this book.
