First published in 1972, this book has since undergone three reprints and has been translated into five languages, viz., Hindi, Gujarati, Bengali, Assamese and Kannada. I have revised it thoroughly for this edition. I am deeply indebted to Prof. George E. Andrews, Head of the Department of Mathematics at Pennsylvania State University (USA) who discovered the Lost Notebook of the great subject of the book, for contributing an inspiring note on his wonderful originality. I must offer my most sincere thanks to Mr. Samuel Israel, former Director, National Book Trust, for going through the manuscript with great care and offering valuable suggestions. I am also obliged to several others for their gracious cooperation and help. Particular mention must be made of Prof. Ajit Ram Varma, (former Director, National Physical Laboratory, New Delhi), Prof. Banwarilal Sharma (former Head of the Department of Mathematics, Allahabad University), my niece, Dr. (Miss) Manjulata Agarwal, Professor in the Department of Operational Research in Delhi University, and my son, Dr. Govind, Additional Director in the Department of Electronics, Strategic Electronics Division, Government of India, New Delhi. Above all, I am profoundly grateful to Mr. P.D. Tandon, distinguished freedom-fighter writer arid journalist of Allahabad, who introduced me about thirty years ago to the late Dr. B.V. Keskar, the then Chairman, National Book Trust, and made this book possible. **Contents and Sample Pages**
