In Unani Classical Literature over 1,500 single drugs have been mentioned, majority of them being of plant origin. Out of these, about 500 are extensively used by the practitioners of Unani System of Medicine. However, the use of plant origin drugs needs correct identification and characterization. This is important not only for authentication but also as an abundant precaution against adulteration. Correct identification and evaluation of raw drugs using various scientific parameters are the prime objectives of standardization work.
Based of these rational, the council under its drug research programme have been undertaking studies on standardization of single and compound drugs at its laboratories in different parts of the country. So far, the Council has published three volumes titled "Standardization of Single Drugs of Unani Medicine", part-1. II and III containing monographs on 50 drugs each.
The present volume titled "Standardization of Single Drugs of Unani Medicine" Part - IV covers the information on Unani Tibbi name(s), botanical name(s), English name(s), Arabic, Persian, Sanskrit, Urdu and other regional name(s). This is followed by brief botanical description of plant, distribution, macroscopic and microscopic characters. The Phytochemical studies and fluorescence analysis of extracts are also covered under this study. Data on major chemical constituents, physicochemical constants extractive values of ash and TLC behavior are also included. The temperament, action(s), therapeutic use(s), dose; correctives and important formulations have also been included based on Unani Classical texts.
It is hoped these studies will be useful to the students, researchers, pharmaceutical industry and allied scientists engaged in the field of standardization of Unani drugs alike.
We express or gratitude to the Council's Scientific Advisory Committee and Drug Research Sub-Committee for their valuable guidance in carrying out this work. I would also like to place on record the immense contribution of various scientists involved at various levels in different laboratories. Dr. S.A. Khan, Assistant Director (Chemistry), Dr.V.K. Singh, Assistant Director (Botany), CCRUM Headquarters, assisted by Mr. Aminuddin, SSA (Botany) deserve special mention. I also acknowledge their contribution in collating and final editing of the material. The Council's Scientists associated with this work at different laboratories for their valued contribution.
