The global trends towards the utilization of natural plant remedies have created an enormous need for information on properties and uses of medicinal plants. There have been tremendous efforts in studies involving medicinal plants, viz. morphological and taxonomical characteristics, geographical distribution, phytochemical investigations of active principles or bioactive molecules, pharmacological effects etc. There is also need for proper collection and identification of the material used in preparation of medicine.
India, due to its unique geographical and climatic diversity, has a rich and diversified flora. On the other hand vastness of the country with diverse regional languages, cause multitude synonyms. While scientifically identifying the drugs in vogue in different regions, the scientists found that there were more than one species of plants, belonging even to different families, claiming the same nomenclature. This created a feeling that there existed a great controversy about the identity of such indigenous drugs and that there were more than one independent drug(s) having different scientific identities claimed to have similar name AND, such innocent impression led to controversial status to such items.
Keeping in view the controversial status of drugs to ensure the authenticity and quality of pharmaceutical material used in Unani formulations, the Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM), under its Drug Research Programme has all along been engaged in standardization of drugs. The laboratories of the Council are busy in evolving pharmacopoeial standards for single as well as compound Unani drugs. In this endeavor, as such, so far, the Council has published four volumes titled "Standardisation of Single Drugs of Unani Medicine" part-1, II, III and IV, containing monographs on 50 single drugs each.
The present volume titled "Standardization of Single Drugs of Unani Medicine" Part-V includes monographs on 50 drugs. It is hoped that this contribution will be received with interest and shall be useful to the scientists, researchers, pharmaceutical industry and allied workers engaged in the field of drug research,
