Democratic Federal Republic of India is nearly half century old now. A half century is no less time for maturing and seasoning of any political system of governance. Are we a matured democracy?
Instead of developing a Swadeshi system of polity and political culture, we adopted and carried on the British colonial legacy in administering our national affairs and government. The result - a severely ill political party system, criminalisation of politics, growing regionalism, secessionist and terrorist activities, communalism, casteism, poll rigging and booth capturing and what not.
The present volume encyclopaedic in nature, is a vivid description of the state- wise political developments in India since the inception. Emergence of state, political parties and leadership, their performance in different general elections, formation of governments, different issues etc. are categorically narrated, supported by the relevant facts and data.
Dr. Sadhna Sharma (b. 1951) is a keen and active researcher in Indian Politics and Political History. Currently she is a Reader in Political Science at Kamala Nehru College (University of Delhi). She is a life member of Indian Society of International Law and has been associated with legal literacy and Adult Education Programmes. She has to her credit the book, The Parliament and the Supreme Court, Institutional Conflict for Supremacy of Power. She has been writing for professional Journals as well.
The work has a deep bearing on States Politics in India and its complexity which have become part and parcel of our society. Although every state region are enmished in their own problems, efforts are, however, put in for their solution at one time or the other. It so happens that several groups and parties show their deep involvement in these problems and they pose as the saviour of the people by giving numerous political and socio-economic promises.
After independence our society who faced with linguistic, ethnic and several other problems and ways and means were adopted to solve these issues in condsideration of the benefit to the people living in those regions. However, some problems remain unresolved as it is a huge rule-continent with millions of people inhabiting it. However the state is always involved in these issues and tries to find out comfortable and agreeable solutions.
