Later when I got to study Indian history seriously and in greater detail, I did not fail to notice that it had all the ingredients of an exciting story if presented in language and form appropriate for young readers. In a panorama of events spreading from prehistoric times to the present day, it had the bold adventures of Rama, Arjuna and Shivaji, spiritual pursuits of Mahavira, Buddha, Sankara and Guru Nanak; political intrigues of Chandragupta Maurya and Chanakya; amusing behaviour of temperamental rulers; charming romances of princes and princesses, rise and fall of empires and of course the great saga of India's freedom struggle. What a wonderful story book would that be to put in the hands of children! This remained my dream.
Thirty years later, the scene hadn't changed much - there still isn't an illustrated history book for children in colour. As I saw my own children growing up, I decided that the time was appropriate to put on paper the dazzling pictures of Indian history which had filled my mind for so long! And this book is the outcome.
Five thousand years is a long stretch of time and India is a vast country. Many events were taking place in different parts at any given time. Therefore, not everything in India's history could possibly have been squeezed into a book like this. I have focussed on very important and exciting events to give the child a bird's eye-view of India's history. However, these various episodes fit together, like pieces in a jig-saw to make one big picture. I've strived to make this picture plain yet beautiful.
Many people helped make this book what it is through their invaluable contributions and I find it difficult to adequately express my gratitude and appreciation.
