Studies in Maratha History' is a revised and enlarged version of the earlier edition published in 1993 under the title 'History in Practice.
This volume is dedicated to the memory of one of the foremost Maratha research scholars of Maharashtra, Dattatraya Vishnu Apte (1881-1943) who was brought up in the tradition of Vishwanath Kashinath Rajwade (1863-1926), a doyen among the Maratha researchers. Wher. D. V. Apte passed away in 1943, his close historian friends, Maha Mahopadhyaya Datto Vaman Potdar, Professor R. V. Oturkar, Shri D. V. Kaie and many other members of the Bharat Itihas Samshodhak Mandal, Pune, founded the Apte Memorial Board in 1943 with a view to perpetuating the memory of the departed historian by arranging a lecture of any eminent or promising scholar of history, every year.
Being associated with this Apte Memorial Board for a fairly long time. I decided to dedicate a volume of essays in Honour of D.V. Apte on the Occasion of Golden Jubilee Year of the Memorial Board in 1993. I also thought of including some of the memorial lectures delivered by scholars in this volume, along with my own research articles. I succeeded in persuading my friends Professor Dietmar Rothermund of South Asia Institute of Heidelberg University, Germans, Dr. Richard P. Tucker, Professor of History, Oakland University, U.S.A., Dr. Raghuvir Sinh, Founder of Historical Research Institute and Library, Sitamau (MP) to allow me to include their Apte Memorial lectures delivered between 1968-1970, in this volume along with my other articles.
