This homage to Dr MA Nayeem was long overdue. At an informal meeting held a friends and admirers of Dr.MA Nayeem decided to recognize the meritorious research and publications with devotion and distinguish service of over four decades to the cause of Deccan History in form. Thus it was decided to honour him by bringing out a festschrift devoted to Studies in the Medieval Deccan History For this purpose, I approached a number of scholars who knew personally or were in touch with Dr Nayeem inviting them to contribute articles for the volume I am glad to say that almost all of them have responded to my request. I have succeeded in a short time in our endeavour with the kind co-operation of our friends who have readily contributed erudite papers to the noble cause in admiration of Dr Nayeem's services but for the timely co-operation of our thirty three scholars, both from India and abroad (Europe and USA). This ambitious Felicitation Volume, would not have seen the light of the day.
The Profile of Dr. Nayeem along with the details of his valuable contribution, research and publications are even separately for the information of the readers. The Profile speaks about his struggle in building up his career as professional historian from basically a Science Graduate But long before he became a professional historian in 1970. His lust and devotion for history as an amateur is evident from his scores of historical publications in Indian and foreign magazines and two books, thoroughly documented with Archival records from 1960 onwards.
I may add quote from one of our contributor Dr K Paddayya, professor emeritus and formerly Director of the Deccan college (deemed to be a University) Pune, who has commented in the opening paragraph of his erudite paper (included here) as follows-I feel honoured to contribute this paper to the Festschrift for Dr MA Nayeem whom I can claim as one of old and esteemed friend. It is creditable that over and above his most known contributions to medieval studies of the Deccan, Dr. Nayeem has undertaken studies of Stone Age sites in the Arabian Peninsula and has brought out some excellent monographs. I am also glad to add that he embodies in himself a fine combination of scholarship and character, a human attribute that is becoming rarer by the day".
Another scholar Professor Teotonio R de Souza from Lisbon University - Portugal (whose paper is included here) and who knew personally Dr. Nayeem for more than four decades also appreciates his academic works and complements him in the opening paragraphs of his article.
This Festschrift presents a wide variety of research papers with relevant illustrations from learned authors, including senior professors as well as professors emeritus based on the original sources. The volume has been divided in two parts. Part One describes the Profile of Dr. Nayeem along the list of his publications, a few of his photographs with the dignitaries. While Part Two is devoted to eminent scholars. Since there are 31 articles, on various topics, they have been classified divided in -eight parts, as detailed in the Contents.
