The Idara e-Adabiyat-e-Urdu presents the fourth Volume of the detailed catalogue of the manuscripts of its library. This volume of the catalogue will also supply valuable information about a considerable number of new bocks and authors to the research scholars in Urdu, as its previous volumes did. It contains details, like the third volume about two hundred manuscripts. Most of the manuscripts are in Urdu and a few such Persian books have been included as are written by Urdu poets and writers or supply information about them or were copied along with the Urdu books and included in the same volume. Along with this fourth volume of the catalogue of manuscripts, the second volume of the catalogue of printed books was also sent to the press. It is yet to come out and soon it will come out. This also, like the first volume, contains details of about five thousand more books. This huge work demands time, labour and money. The Idara is trying to curtail its programme of other accomplishments and concentrate more on this work as it is prone to bring about far reaching effects. It is because of these catalogues that interested men of letters from far and near are learning about the Idara and its library and are making avail of the facilities provided here. Not a single day passes when research scholars and other men interested in Literature do not come to the Idara personally or write letters and make enquiries. This has no doubt increased the work and responsibilities of the personnel of the Idara but the Idara is meant and does exist only to serve the Urdu language and those who speak it and so they do not mind it. This volume of the Catalogue could have been published earliar if there had been no scarcity of paper in Andhra Pradesh After making long and strenuous efforts we could get the paper but the quantity we got was insufficient and the price we paid was heavy as a result of which we had to curtail some of the details regarding the manuscripts, and seek brevity in expression. We had to resort to single space in printing, so that the paper might be used sparingly without affecting the matter. This account for the decrease in the number of pages of the volume (300) when compared with those of the third volume (400 pages). It must be acknowledged with gratitude indeed, that this volume like the third one would not have seen the light of the day, if the Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi. had not come to our rescue and helped us in meeting the printing expenses We are grateful to the Akademi for its financial help and we hope that all the research scholars and other interested persons in Urdu literature will also appreciate this gesture.
