About the book

10 years ago the publication of my "A Text Book on Shalyatantra" happened and a revision of this book was due keeping in consideration the opinions and feedbacks of my vast students and teachers. Thus I am presenting to you all a new "Rajneesh’s Text Book of Shalyatantra"’.

The syllabus points mentioned in the new syllabus of Shalyatantra, as prescribed by CCIM, has been covered in detail, along with shloka and information from modern text books regarding the same topics has been detailed a little more.

For the first time, the text book is being brought out in color print to make it visually appealing so as to increase the readers’ attention. Color photographs have been added wherever possible along with tables and flow charts to make the understanding of the topics easier.

Now the text book is more informative and appealing and thus I expect it to be greatly appreciated by the students, both Undergraduates and Postgraduates, and the teachers as well. Any lacunae needs to be forgiven and the feedbacks are welcome for further improvisation of this text.

A Text Book of Shalyatantra (According to CCIM syllabus)

Preface

Ayurveda the ‘science of life’, since the Vedic times, has laid importance to not only the management of disease but also its prevention. The greatness of Ayurveda lies in the fact that it identifies health not only as a state of being disease-free physically. but also includes a happy and healthy psychological and spiritual state in its definition of health. The complete definition of health was thus first laid down in Ayurveda.

Ayurveda as it grew and faced challenges, professionalised the field of medicine by dividing the science into 8 branches i.e. Ashtanga Ayurveda, for a better and thorough management of vast diseases both physical and mental, which a human suffered from birth till death.

Among these 8 branches, the branch of Shalyatantra specialised in removing shalya from the body. Shalya can be defined as anything which causes hindrance to the normal functioning of the body or the mind, maybe a foreign body or bodily substances like viuated dosha. dhatu or mala.

Shalyatantra described various surgical, non-surgical removal of these shalva to attain a state of ‘sukha’ or health or bliss. Thus surgery, purificatory measures, pharmacological preparations and so on have been dealt in detail in the branch of Shalyatantra.

Shalyatantra mainly deals with ‘Shastrakarma’ or surgical procedures and ‘Anushastra karma’ or minimally invasive surgical procedures, and medical management of a varied spectrum of diseases.

Thus a practitioner of Shalyatantra is not only an expert in the field of Shastrakarma and Anushastra karma, but also is enriched with knowledge of various bheshaja for the conservative management of all the diseases tormenting the mankind.

The present work of mine, considering the opinions and feedback of students to whom it caters to, has been constructed in a very informative way. The details available in Ayurveda, along with concise information regarding these topics from various modern text books of medicine, surgery, anatomy, pharmacology etc has been presented in a very attractive, colourful, schematic and simple form so that the students both Undergraduates and Post-Graduates who read them get a basic knowledge of Shalyatantra. In this context lam thankful to the authors of various texts of modern medicine, from whose works I have taken the essence of knowledge as required by the students of BAMS course, as prescribed the CCIM, New Delhi.

I hope this text which is a fruit of hard work of three years, is well received by the students of Ayurveda in their endeavour of becoming a knowledgeable Vaidya, and help them in the path of attaining dharma, artha, kama and moksha.

My efforts would not have been so beautifully presented to you people if M/s. Chaukhamba Orientalia, Varanasi had not ably supported my hard work. I am thankful to Mr. Atul Gupta for his patience and support all along my life since my days at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi.

Any work of creation requires happiness, peaceful mind and a healthy body. The sole source of all these are my family. I acknowledge the role of all my family members for providing me a Space and support for completing this hard task.
