I sincerely hope that this book of Dravyaguna will prove beneficial to all students and teachers who assign it, and that the students will gain all the necessary knowledge from it.
I am extremely happy to write this foreword for the book entitled "Text Book of Dravyaguna vol-1" written by my student Dr. Desh Raj, Assistant Professor, Department of Dravyaguna, Abhilashi Ayurvedic College & Research Institute, Chailchowk, Mandi, Himachal Pradesh. He is sincere, hardworking and committed towards his work.
The subject of Dravyaguna is not included in the Ashtang Ayurveda, but Dravya has beenmentioned from the time of Vedas with their properties and uses. The Rig-Veda which is the oldest repository of human knowledge has described about the plants. The classification of plants according to their external appearance as well as medical virtues wasalso attempted. The concept of Dravya, Rasa, Guna, Virya and Vipaka on the basis of Panchamahabhuta is a remarkable land mark during Samhitä period.
Perceived as one of the biggest changes in Ayurvedic medical education in recent times, the new B.A.M.S. curriculum was received with much enthusiasm and expectations by the Ayurvedic medical fraternity though it meant more efforts to be put in by everyone. Implementation of new syllabus has brought out the need to tailor the contents of Dravyaguna, with a focus on increasing its scientific application. The content of the book is organized in line with the updated B.A.M.S.syllabus, where appropriate, tables, flowcharts and figures have been included to help clarify the idea and make the terminology more understandable.
I am confident that this book will be of great use to B.A.M.S. students as well as to Ayurvedic academicians and research scholars.
