At a time when the natural systems of our world have been pushed to the brink of collapse, a change is needed not only in the behavior of humankind, but in the roots of the thinking that has lead to this behavior in the first place. Solutions that do not address this root cause of our crisis do not go far enough. This has now been understood by farsighted people the world over. The "Thought Revolution" of Pandit Acharya Shriram Sharma is not only a plan for how personal and social change can be brought about; it is a dynamic cultural and spiritual movement that is sweeping throughout India and beyond. The way that this movement has integrated inner and out change is something that the rest of the world currently cannot afford to overlook. Within the pages of this book, the thought and work of Acharya Sharma have been made accessible to a Western audience for the first time. In addition to a broader vision and plan, the instructions he gave provide practical guidelines for how 21st Century change makers and social activists can most effectively accomplish their goals. It is hoped that the ideas expressed herein will offer both inspiration and support.
Pandit Acharya Shriram Sharma (1911-1990) was said to be the simplest of men. Throughout his life he owned only two sets of clothes. He began every day with a pad of paper and a ball point pen. And his spiritual practice, throughout his life, was the recitation of a single mantra. And yet, wherever he went, he sowed seeds that would grow into a mighty movement. Upon the basis of his simplicity was established the integrity of a movement that would renounce the addictions of modern life. With his pen and paper, he wrote discourses on every aspect of human culture and well being that would be translated into 13 languages. And by means of his mantra recitation, he laid the energetic foundation for a new human culture based on the practices and wisdom of ancestral India. In his own time, he was revered as a visionary, a prophet and a world reforming saint.
The coming together of the cultures of the East and the West is an essential component of our Reverend Gurudev, Pandit Shriram Sharma Acharya's vision for the planet's future. Indeed, the work begun by our Gurudev will not be complete until we see the synthesis of these two streams of human accomplishment and never before has the necessity for this convergence been more apparent. The accomplishments of the great spiritual scientists of ancient India, such as Patanjali, Charak and Nagarjuna, have been revived and adapted by modern saints such as Aurobindo, Vivekananda and our Gurudev. As a result of these and other efforts, India has never lost its precious knowledge of the inner realms of consciousness, despite the bewildering advancements of the 20th Century.
