It will indeed be hard to come across someone who has never heard of this iconic and iconoclastic mystic. And this is despite hailing from the fifteenth or sixteenth century. His poetry abounds in complex metaphors, analogies and apparently converse statements. He conveyed his hard-hitting teachings through liberal usage of metaphors, albeit intricate, based upon incidents from day to day life.

It is by no means easy to decipher or grasp the essence held in the subtext, especially in a language that is earthy, rustic vernacular. Indeed, such is the impenetrable gist of his poetry that it is simply inscrutable for average folk. That is why his work needs to be understood from an awakened being, from an enlightened master who has tasted the same Truth that Kabir had.
