Professor TV. Mahalingam (1907-1983) was in the field of Indian Historical and Archaeological Research for over 40 years. He wrote a thesis on Administration and Social Life under Vijayanagar for which he was awarded the Degree of Doctor of Letters by the Madras University in 1942.

He has to his credit more than a hundred papers and several books, including Banas in South Indian History, South Indian Polity. Early South Indian Paleography and Report on the Excavations in the Lower Kaveri Valley (Part 1) etc. He was a Research Fellow of the Indian Council of Historical Research where he had completed important and voluminous work on the topographical Inscriptions found in various Southern Indian States.

In the series of ten volumes on the Topographical List of Inscriptions in the Tamil Nadu and Kerala States up to C.A.D. 1300. It contains, on the whole, 1240 inscriptions listed and arranged according to the pro- forma mentioned in the Preface to the first volume. It covers villages in the nine taluks into which the district is divided- Ambasamudram (1 to 424): Kovilpathi (425 to 563); Nan- guneri (564 to 666); Sankara- nayinarkoyil (667 to 697): Shonkottah (698 to 701): Sri- vaikuntam (702 to 803): Ten- kasi (804 to 872): Tiruchendur (873 to 1062) and Tirunelveli (1063 to 1246). However, as The districts of the taluks have been delimited in recent times, the references given in this volume should be taken as those of old division.

The value of this and the other volumes of this series lies in the fact that they present various facets of the political, social, economic, religious and cultural life of the people of this region in the ancient and early medieval period of history. This material can be fruitfully used for restructuring several unknown aspects of history and polity.

The present volume is the ninth in the series of volumes of Topographical List of inscriptions in the Tamil Nadu and Kerala States ago c AD 1300 it contains on the whole 1245 inscriptions listed and arranged according to the proforma mentioned in the Preface to the first volume. It covers villages in the nine taluks into which the district is divided (AMBASAMUDRAM-1424, KOVILPATTI 425 563, NANGUNERI 564- 666, SANKARANAYINARKOYIL 667-697, SHENKOTTAH 68-701, SRI- VAIKUNTAM 702-80. TENKASI 804-872; TIRUCHENDUR 873-1062 and TIRUNELVELI 1063-1246).
