The museum curators not only engage themselves in curating exhibitions of the priceless museum materials in their custody for public viewing but undertake research works on them as well. The outcomes of their research works are published periodically in the form of research papers, monographs, catalogues and compendiums. Select research papers of Dr.C. Maheswaran, Curator for Anthropology of the Government Museum, Chennai which get published between, 1980-2000 (in English & Tamil) are being presented as a compendium entitled, "Tribal & Folk Culture Studies". through museum publication.

Research is one of the five aspects of a modern museum. Hence, the museum curators are expected to fulfil this aspect as well, in addition to undertaking of acquisition, documentation, exhibition and education. The 'acquisition of museum materials leads to 'documentation', which consequently leads to undertaking of 'research', via 'exhibition' and 'education. The curatorial staff through 'research papers periodically publish the findings of research works.
