Kings were the top of the warrior (kshatriya) class and were usually ex- perts in warfare as well as administration. The kings of mythology were a colourful lot. Some (like King Vrihadashy) were brave and kindly, and took their duties to their subjects very seriously. But there were others (like King Durjay) who were quite irresponsible. Some had many wives, others were devoted to one. Towards their sons and daughters, they were usually most affectionate. But when necessary, they could be strict with them (like King Trayarun and the king of Vidarbh). Vows or promises that they made were most important to them. They did all they could to honour their promises.
