India is one of the few countries that have taken major lead towards establishing the Pharmacopoeial standards of its traditional medicines. For ensuring the manufacturing of the quality ASUSH drugs, the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 was amended in the year 1964 to bring within the range of its operations and rules there under. This has led necessary to work out the standards of Unani Drugs under Unani Pharmocopoeia of India (UP).
UPI is a legal document comprising of the standards for establishing the quality of preferred Unani drugs that are manufactured, distributed and sold by licensed drug manufacturers in India. Ministry of Ayush has already published Standards of 298 single Unani drugs and 200 classical compound formulations of Unani system of Medicine. This work is continuing with the addition of new monographs as on-going work of Pharmacopoeia Commission for Indian Medicine & Homoeopathy (PCIMSH).
The present UPI, P-1, Vol. VII comprises of 40 monographs of the most frequently used plant origin Unani drugs. The work carried out for this volume is of high scientific quality and will provide reference to various groups of stakeholders. The work compromised in this volume is accomplished at different premier Drug Standardization Units under Ministry of Ayush.
