Dr. A. N. Upadhye was born at Sadalgi a village in Chikkodi taluk of Belgaum district on 2nd February 1906 A.D. He had his education at Belgaum, Kolhapur. Sangli and Pune. He passed MA. in first class from Bhandarkar's Institute, Pune. Soon after passing the examination he was appointed as teacher of Ardhamagadhi and Prakrit at Rajaram College, Kolhapur. It was here, he served for 33 years: in various capacities. Since then Dr. Upadhye's work may be divided into three spheres: Teaching, Research and Publication. In 1939. he was awarded the degree of D.Lit. by the University of Bombay. Dr. Upadhye was associated with many important literary institutions of India and abroad He was a general editor along with Prof. H. L. Jain to the Joana Pitha Publication. In the year 1971 and 1973 he represented on behalf of Government of India in the Inter national Literary Conferences held at Canbera (Australia) and Paris (France) and presented papers. He served as President, of A.L.O.C. held at Aligarh (1966) and of Kannada Sahitya. Sammelana of Kannada Sahitya Parishat held at Sravana Belgola (1967). He established the Department of Jainology and Prakrit at the University of Mysore, of which he was the first professor and head (1971-75). He was also honoured as National Sanskrit Scholar by the Government of India (1975). Dr. Upadhye died at Kolhapur on 8th October 1975.
