This monograph on Urolithiasis, one of the series of monographs on common diseases, is a sincere effort and significant contribution of Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy (CCRH), an autonomous body of Department of AYUSH, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India, under the supervision of the team of CCRH and contribution and able guidance of the experts in the field from various premier institutes.
Urolithiasis is one of the most common afflictions of human kind. This monograph on Urolithiasis incorporates various topics related to Urinary stone disease and has contributions from experts of Allopathy as well as experts of Homoeopathy. The monograph provides a comprehensive knowledge of Urolithiasis and I am sure, this compilation will be useful to readers of health sciences practicing different systems of medicine. The chapter on introduction takes one to the history of stone disease, its epidemiology and the problems imposed by Urolithiasis. The second chapter elaborates on different types of urinary calculi, causation and mechanism involved in genesis of calculi. This chapter imparts knowledge on the various risk factors which are important for application of suitable preventive measures. The third chapter describes the salient clinical features; symptoms, signs and complications of calculus. How to diagnose a stone in different locations of urinary tract has also been explained here. The chapter on management of urinary calculus pertains to clearance of existing calculi. The management of agonizing pain due to stone and the role of medical management for facilitating the spontaneous passage and/or dissolving the calculi have been described. Descriptions on modalities of interventions, and their pros & cons will help one to choose a suitable option for an individual case. The chapter on prevention emphasizes the need of measures to be taken for halting the high propensity of recurrence. General measures are important and more practical. The chapter further describes how to take care of different risk factors with medical measures, if the need arises.
Homoeopathic part of this monograph describes the concept of health; evolution of disease in general and urolithiasis in particular; the therapeutics and repertory in relation with urolithiasis. As there are frequent recurrences in this disease condition, there is a definite need to find therapeutic intervention, suitable to check such recurrences and also give relief to the patient from the agonizing symptoms in a gentle manner. Council has taken up research study in this field and the observations of the same have been depicted in the section on 'Homoeopathic Research'. A few case records and scientific papers related to the topic found on literary search, have also incorporated in this section.
I wish the monograph would serve the purpose, which it is intended for.
