Vaastu Shaastra, the Vedic treatise on the principles of design and construction, is more intricate and elaborate than how the texts in circulation today understand it. These books erroneously attempt to provide readymade solutions in the form of drawings for designs of buildings, thereby fixing the architectural expression of the norms.
What makes this book exclusive is its intensive discussions on aspects like typology, form, aesthetics, building elements, materials of construction, and the system of proportionate measurement. The study of Vaastu Shaastra in this book is presented not as an assembly of fragmentary pieces of knowledge, but as a complete program for architectural design and sustainable development. It treats Vaastu Shaastra not as a rigid set of rules and directives, but as a huge corpus of knowledge that forms the primary blueprint.
This work is an empirical collection based on extensive research on Vaartu Shaastra The work has been divided into two parts. Part One begins with the Introduction, which surveys Vaastu Shaastra. This is followed by explaining the reasons for the limited usage of Vaastu and its scientific analysis in the modern world. Brief definitions of Techne, Technique, Science and Technology are given, and their relevance to Vaastu is explained. Further, I attempt to explain how the understanding of Vaastu science is analogous to the 'Commonsense Theory' of Aristotle. The chapter on 'Heidegger and Vaastu' discusses the resemblance between Heidegger's 'Bauen, Wohnen und Denken and Vaastu Shaastra. Along with the ancient texts and the origin of Vaastu Shaastra, the concept and fundamental principles of Vaastu Shastra have been presented scientifically by giving equal importance to mathematics and geometry.
The chapter on 'Fundamental Reasons behind Vaastu Shaastra' explains various reasonings that form the basis of Vaastu, like 'Vaastu and Energy', where implicit knowledge is given as the background theory, making the concept of cosmic energy and geo-magnetic fields clearer. Followed by the concept of time and space, the philosophy of nature discusses Parusha, Prakriti, Praana and the Mind. Further, important reasons are given in the section on "Vaastu and Astrology' by analyzing the Vaartw Purusha Mandala, sequenced by 'Science and Morality' Part Two discusses Vaastu and Sustainable Development', explaining the concept of sustainable development and then learning through tradition about forest splendor, culture, heritage, and enhanced accessibility of forests.
