In the following pages I write in some detail about the life and work of eight people whom I regard as old friends. Among them, as far as I know-since information about one is not available-only two, and possibly three are 'with us' in the usual connotation of this phrase. Country-wise, my visits are in several places-South Africa, Australia, Germany, Greece, England, Russia and America.
In many of my previous writings I have stressed how history as commonly understood in terms of trends and forces, whether political, economic or otherwise, has as its background a host of personal histories which should not be forgotten. This is very evident in autobiographies and biographies, and also in interviews with those who have lived through traumatic historic happenings and can witness to them in their capacity as survivors.
