Sambalpuri ikat fabric is a traditional handwoven fabric that originates from the eastern Indian state of Odisha. Since it is well-known for the intricate weaving patterns, brilliant colors, and traditional motifs that it includes, it is choicest among those who are interested in fashion as well as passionate about traditional handloom sarees.
This booklet explores old approaches involved in Sambalpuri Ikat production with a vision to preserve this traditional art in the form of literature.
In India, over 25 types of traditional textile products can be found, among which the Sambalpuri Ikat fabric holds a unique position. Belonging to western Odisha, this traditional hand- woven cloth, which is produced by incorporating the tie-and- dye technique, is praised for its intricate motifs made out of vibrant colors.
In 2013, as a student at the Indian Institute of Handloom Technology, Bargarh, I got a chance to study about this traditional art during our project work. While compiling the project report, I found it difficult to write about the techniques involved in the production of Sambalpuri Ikat due to the unavailability of sufficient literature. My teachers encouraged me to go to the expert weavers and try to learn the basics of this art. I approached Shri Gopinath Meher of Bhatli Block, Bargarh, who explained the process in detail. One of my classmates, Shri Gourachandra Meher, also helped me a lot in understanding it. Later, I tried to compile it, and an introductory draft was prepared regarding the techniques involved in the weaving process.
I desired to publish it, but due to a lack of proper guidance and encouragement, it has been delayed for over a decade.
However, a very short work is finally prepared. I have compiled my understanding of this topic that I have gained from Shri Gopinath Meher and Shri Gourachandra Meher. This booklet will help handloom technocrats and other researchers interested in Sambalpuri Ikat and its intricacies. This small booklet is just the beginning of the technical documentation of this art form.
In addition to having a long and illustrious history, Sambalpuri handloom textiles have been an integral component of Odisha's cultural legacy for many generations. The term "Sambalpuri" originates from the district of Sambalpur, which is located in western Odisha and is the location where these textiles were historically made. Throughout the history of the Bhulia people, the weaving of Sambalpuri ikat cloth has been an essential component of their daily lives. The Bhulia are the principal weavers of these fabrics. There are a number of places that are well-known for their production of Sambalpuri ikat textiles. Some of these locations are Sambalpur, Bargarh, and Balangir.
