The yoga therapy system used in this book was developed at the Vivekananda yoga Therapy and Research Foundation. Dr. Nagendra is the director and founder of the Foundation and Dr. Nagarathna is a consulting yoga therapist there.
In 1975 Dr H R Nagendra gave up a prestigious and successful career in engineering in NASA and as consultant at Harvard in order to work for the Vivekanadna Yoga Centre in India. Shortly in 1986 he established the Vivekananda Yoga Research Foundation (VYASA) in Bangalore. South India, of which he became full-time President. The aim of VYASA is to bring the benefits of Yoga into daily life and to carry out critical research into the effectiveness of Yoga therapy. With his nearly 100 research publications in Yoga and its applications, he is a member of the Planning commission of Govt. of India, member of NIMHANS society and the Chancellor of S-VYASA a unique and only Yoga University having his HQ in Prashanti Kutiram, Bengaluru, India.
Dr Nagendra was helped in this task by Dr R Nagarathna, who qualified in internal medicine and is a member of Royal college of Physicians in Edinburgh getting, FRCP later for her research contributions in yoga therapy. Authoring and co-authoring over 100 research publications, she has been awarded DLitt by Tumkur and Kuvempu Universities, She has provided the medical knowledge to develop the Vivekananda system of Integrated Approach of Yoga therapy, which is the basis used in this book. She has brought solace to hundreds of thousands of Patients suffering from modern NCDs. Now she is the Chief of the 250 beds 'Arogyadhama' a holistic health centre in Prashanti Kutiram campus and is spear heading a nationwide movement called Stop Diabetes Movement (SDM).
VYASA has trained thousands of Yoga therapists all over the world in nearly 30 countries, helped more than millions people with chronic disorders, and has carried out critical research into the effectiveness of Yoga therapy for bronchial asthma, diabetes mellitus, and several other ailments. It has published nearly 250 research papers in the British Medical Journal and such other journals of repute.
