The rural arts of Mithila are unique for they combine a comprehension of Sanskrit learning and culture, its vocabulary and iconography and the distortions and robust vitality inherent in the perceptions of village folk. In fact, the two worlds of spirit and matter blend in Madhubani paintings.

The Maithilas are deeply religious and hence iconographic images of various gods and goddesses can be seen. Durga is the 'Ista devi' of all Maithila Brahmans and Kayasthas. They consider her the most powerful form of Parvati, a Tantrika goddess and she has always aroused the artistic sensibilities of these talented painters. Examining, this image of eighteen armed Durga, holding numerous attributes, we notice that the line of the painting is static, unimportant and subordinate to colour. Energy and passion find expression through the use of these bright colours.

The form of Durga has been reduced to simple shallow plane adding intensity resulting from simplicity. Devi, atop the roaring lion has three eyes and which are wide and staring. She is adorned with jewellery of all kinds. Her elaborate crown has been intricately worked on. What is also unique in this painting is the use of geometric energy. In the form of Durga, a set of semi-circles, triangles and rounded squares are used. These geometric distortions make the form acquire a strange tone of potent dignity.

All these things collectively lend a general radiance to the painting.
